My 3 Favourite Supplements for a Healthy Pregnancy (Plus Free Toolkit Download)

My first baby was born when I was 21. I had my 7th at 38. I can honestly say that I was expecting the pregnancy, birth and recovery of the 7th baby to be HARD. Everything I’d heard and read, and certainly the hospital’s assessment of me as a “geriatric mother”, led me to believe that this was going to be a real slog.

Thankfully though, I’d come across the work of Oscar Serrallach, author of The Postnatal Depletion Cure, and that opened up a whole new world of learning about the importance of nourishing our bodies while carrying and caring for babies.

In my earlier pregnancies, I did almost nothing to improve wellness or chances of recovery. It never even occurred to me that I should look into it. I just took the recommended pre- and post-natal multi-vitamins and off I went, birthing time and time again and accruing a huge body debt that would catch up with me after baby number 6.

So what did I do differently with my 7th?

When I fell pregnant again, I was armed with the knowledge that a lack of minerals can cause fatigue and nausea and I knew that the baby was pulling from my mineral reserves so I was determined to bolster my own stores with the right supplements. I was also studying aromatherapy so I knew there was a whole world of tools available that I had never even considered for previous pregnancies.

NingXia

NingXia is a blend of superfood antioxidants including wolfberry (gojiberry) puree, grapeseed and pure vanilla extracts, blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate and plum juices, plus orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils. It has been clinically shown to provide energy support without caffeine, support whole-body health and wellness, improve sleep patterns and increase time asleep and reduce daily stress and all of this has definitely been my experience with NingXia and it’s why it’s a non-negotiable for me now.

Beef Liver

This and NingXia were basically the only supplements I took during my 7th pregnancy* and it helped immensely to keep my energy levels high. I upped the dosage at 28 weeks to turn my ferritin levels around in less than 4 weeks. Ferritin went from <8 to 33! With all the goodness of zinc, iron, phosphorus, selenium, and copper, I still take this daily now to support post-partum recovery, milk supply and overall wellness.

Electrolytes

Perhaps not technically considered a supplement, electrolytes are hugely important for maintaining homeostasis and can regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, regulate heart and brain function and help rebuild damaged tissue. I wasn’t about to miss that boat. I started adding electrolytes to my water during labour and have continued to drink them almost daily since.
