Because dishwasher tablets are currently $40+ a bag 🥴
But also because… fragrance.
Most brands of dishwasher tablets contain artificial fragrance and we know that this isn’t actually a thing. “Fragrance” or “parfum” aren’t specific products or single chemicals. They’re cover terms for any number of hundreds of products and the fact of the matter is, we usually don’t know which ones.
Manufacturers don’t have to share the exact products used to scent their range and often this has to do with trade secrets.
Fragrance chemicals have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system so it’s something we’ve worked hard to remove from our home over the past few years.
I’ve made dishwasher tablets on and off over the years but never really been consistent with it. Well, the current price is certainly a good incentive to put the effort in and ditch these once and for all.
And it’s really not that much effort.
I made this lot in a few minutes and the cost is less than $5 for a batch of 27 – or 18 cents each, which is much more palatable than 50-97 cents a pop!
Recipe:
1 cup washing soda
1/4 cup citric acid
1/4 cup salt
2 caps of Thieves Household Cleaner
10-20 drops of essential oil of choice
Mix the ingredients well, press down firmly into moulds and leave overnight to dry out. Store in an airtight container.
Let me know if you give these a go!
