Ditch and Switch: Going Low Tox With an Essential Oils Starter Bundle

Ditching toxic chemicals around your home and switching to clean, safe alternatives doesn’t have to be difficult or cost-prohibitive.

All you need is the commitment… and some oils! The oils premium starter bundle is the bundle I bought when I first started out with Young Living nearly 3 years ago. I needed some more oils and another diffuser and at 50% off RRP, the bundle was incredible value. I’d been using oils for over 10 years and thought I’d just top up the oils that I’d been using for cleaning, craft and diffusing. Little did I know I’d be ditching a tonne of toxic chemicals around my home and switching to low tox alternatives over the next few months.

The starter bundle comes with 12 oils and with these bottles of liquid gold you really can switch out a whole raft of products around your home. Here are some places to start:

Ditch – store-bought soap

Store-bought soap often contains phthalates, parabens and fragrance which have been linked to skin irritation, respiratory disorders and endocrine disruption. Ditch the commercial additives and opt for a simple solution that’s made at home and costs a fraction of the price.

Switch – home-made soap

You’ll need:

Foaming pump bottle
Essential oils of choice*
Castile soap
Distilled water

Fill the bottle with one-third Castile soap, add your oils and top with water.

*for a 200 mL foaming pump bottle, I used 5 drops lemon and 15 drops lavender

Ditch – toxic air freshener

Ingredients commonly used in fragrances in air fresheners include phthalates, which make fragrances last longer and are linked to male reproductive system birth defects and hormone disruption, and synthetic musks, which are linked to allergies and hormone disruption. (ewg.org)

Switch – diffuser

You’ll need:

A diffuser (comes with your bundle)
Essential oils (remember, there are 12 in the premium starter bundle)

Here are some diffuser blend ideas to get you started:

Calm – 3 drops Stress Away, 3 drops lavender
Energise – 3 drops peppermint, 3 drops orange
Breathe – 3 drops R.C., 3 drops lemon

Ditch – commercial chest rub

Want a chest rub that doesn’t contain petroleum jelly? You can make one using an oil from your starter kit and something you probably already have in the pantry.

Switch – DIY chest rub

You’ll need:

Small glass jar (150 mL)
R.C. essential oil
Coconut oil

Liquify enough coconut oil to almost fill the jar. Add this to the jar and then add 25 drops of R.C. essential oil. Allow the mix to re-solidify (it can take a couple of days) and then use to help ease congestion by rubbing a small amount on chest and neck.

Ditch – face toner

Many commercially available facial toners contain fragrances of unknown origin. The word ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ is used as the nondescript code word for hundreds of chemicals in thousands of everyday products.

Switch – DIY face toner

You’ll need:

Misting or dropper bottle
Lavender EO
Frankincense EO
Vitamin E oil (optional)
Witch hazel

Add 3 drops of each essential oil and ½ a teaspoon of vitamin E oil in a misting bottle or dropper bottle. Top with witch hazel.

Ditch – store-bought bath salts

Who needs pre-packaged bath salts from the Mother’s Day shelves at the supermarket?

Make your own no-tox bath salts using essential oils from the premium starter kit and a few other staples.

Switch – DIY bath salts

You’ll need:

1 cup epsom salts
1 cup quick oats
1/2 cup baking soda
20 drops lavender EO
10 drops orange EO
Dried lavender (optional)

Combine ingredients and keep in jar to use in the bath or for a relaxing foot soak.
